Is coffee healthy or not?

Last week I visited my doctor and while chatting, she told me that she once had a patient who was always very small. Year after year, she would come in weighing about 110 pounds and one year she came in about 15 pounds heavier. When my doctor asked what she has changed her diet over the past year, she said that she had incorporated a daily habit of buying a 16 ounce latte.

Just as a disclaimer, I am arguing that black coffee it’s more healthy than unhealthy. This does not include any added sugar, milk, cream or flavors. Being a barista for several years, I have learned how terrible espresso drinks can truly be and how people do not understand what they contain. In a plain16 ounce latte like the patient above, there is 230 cal, 12 g of fat in 19 carbs. If you just add some chocolate to this drink in order to make it a mocha, it bumps the numbers up to 330 cal, 12 fat and 42 carbs.Adding this habit to your daily life can obviously come with different issues that you may experience  including weight gain.

As far as black coffee goes, many people argue that it is very unhealthy while others argue that it is one of the healthiest things that you can drink. I will be getting down to the arguments that both sides have as well as making my case in defense for the healthiness of coffee.

First of all, just plain caffeine can boost your metabolism. Metabolism is basically calories burned over time. In studies it has been showed that it can boost your metabolism by 3 to 11%. Along with this, it can also make your workouts better. If you do choose to work out, it can increase exercise performance by 11 to 12% on average.

Coffee may help you lose weight. Coffee contains magnesium and potassium, which helps the human body use insulin, regulating blood sugar levels and reducing your craving for sugary treats and snacks.

When your blood sugar levels are regulated and stable, you don’t crave as much sugar. By opting out on simple sugary snacks or sodas because of this, you can ultimately save a lot of sugar and calories at the end of the day.

Coffee brightens your mood, helps fight depression and lowers risk of suicide. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system and boosts production of neurotransmitters like serotonin, dopamine, and noradrenaline, which elevate your mood.

Obviously there is more to being holistic than just physical health. Health is not just what you feel physically or what you can see on the outside, and our mental and emotional health are just as if not more important. Caffeine stimulates the central nervous system. This boost the number amount of neurotransmitters that includes serotonin, and dopamine. Both of these could help improve your mood and how you feel! If you feel better, than this can relate to less anxiety and depression. It has also been shown through several studies that just drinking 2 cups of coffee a day can reduce your risk of suicide by 50%. That’s a happy cup of Jo!

Also, there are so many antioxidants in coffee naturally. According to authority nutrition, The average person who eats a typical Western diet actually gets more antioxidants from coffee than fruits and vegetables

Of course, there are some negatives to drinking coffee even if it has no added sugar or cream. Many people do not like coffee and complain about side effects that they get from drinking it.

Coffee can cause insomnia and restlessness. Again, it’s the caffeine working here. Your recommended maximum amount of caffeine is 400 milligrams, roughly the amount that you’ll get from 4 cups of coffee. If you’re caffeine-sensitive, be careful with coffee. You are probably already aware what amount and what kind of coffee suits, or doesn’t suit you. The amount of caffeine that is safe for human consumption is actually written in our DNA.

If you are new to drinking coffee or have caffeine sensitivity, I would definitely recommend starting at a half a cup to a cup each morning to pick up your mood and start your day without keeping your restless. Another tip is to simply stop drinking coffee earlier. I find that drinking coffee after 2:00 PM keeps me up. Another secret recommendation because I have been a barista for so many years, is to get the darkest possible. If this is too strong for you, you could always water it down. When coffee beans roast, it also roasts out the caffeine. The lighter the roast, the more caffeine. It is a common misconception that darker coffee will give you more energy just because it is more better and robust.

Another downside of drinking coffee is that you can become dependent on it both physically and mentally. After stopping, you may experience symptoms like headache’s, tiredness and irritability. This could be just as bad as somebody who takes a prescription medication each day or an alcoholic. But thankfully, the symptoms only last a short amount of time and you were back to normal within a week or two!

In defense for coffee, yes there are a lot of negative sides. There are things that are not perfect about drinking coffee, and it can be unhealthy to drink too much. But overall, coffee is one of the healthiest things that you can drink. Containing antioxidants and vitamins as well as caffeine that helps you go through your day, at only 5 cal a cup is a catch. If you don’t like coffee, try to find a blend that works for you! Not all types of coffee are exactly alike, and there can you amazing things that can happen by just introducing black coffee into your daily life.
